Alt Meadows – What a Difference One Year Makes!

Posted by on Jul 20, 2016 in News

On May 13th of this year, we visited Alt Meadows, a 900 metre linear park with 8.2ha of green space at Stonebridge here in Liverpool. We are delighted by the transformation it has undergone since its opening a little more than a year ago, from a once derelict and unused site, into what is now proving to be a well-loved and used outdoor space which is of great benefit to residents in the local area.

An impressive feat of engineering was involved in the excavation of the new river channel supporting the establishment of micro habitats for riparian wildlife. Although still only in the early stages of establishment, the 3ha of grassland and 1.65ha of wildflower meadow are taking form and the riparian planting is successfully growing in. The restoration of the site was approached with great sensitivity. During the Ecological Assessment of the site, an area containing bee orchids was spotted. As a result, the soil within the site was reused in hopes of retaining the species.

EAT worked directly with  Ecological Restoration Consultants Limited (ERC), the appointed ecological advisors to the River Alt project, producing drawings and technical information for the in-channel works. This included the design of new channel profiles, flood plain ledges, gravel riffle beds and erosion control to the banks. The wetland planting included coir rolls and palettes as well as different wildflower and wetland seed mixes.

Created by residents of a local nursing home and 9 local community groups, the newly installed mosaics in the footpath add a personal touch to Alt Meadows, with their depictions of local wildlife. Incredibly, 20 such species have been documented so far at the site, including Kingfisher, Heron, Linnet and Goldfinches, standing as a testament to the efficacy of the micro habitat.

We’re really looking forward to visiting again to witness the further evolution of the planting and variety of wildlife.  We believe Alt Meadows to be an inspiring model for the successful regeneration and restoration of previously derelict urban areas. It is amazing to see how inter-connectivity and nuanced balances are not only beneficial for healthy habitats and biodiversity but are also key factors that help shape and contribute to the wellbeing of residents. No matter whether you are a nature lover, passionate about scenic walks or cycling, mad about plants and flowers, an artist, or simply want to see the cities we live in be transformed into places of beauty and tranquility through organized community groups, there is something to bring pleasure to everyone.
